Mutoni: The Innovator of Kiruku
A story about science, curiosity and refusing to be counted out.
This comic book follows the journey of Mutoni, a teenage girl from the rural Gakenke district who is fascinated by science. Despite daily chores and societal discouragement, she refuses to give up on her dreams. She teams up with colleagues Simbi and Kagabo to create an invention that revolutionises agriculture, gaining recognition locally and internationally. Driven by a desire to make the world better through the magic of science, the power of technology and the hope of innovation, the young inventors inspire people across generations to pursue impactful ideas.
How it came about
In October 2023 I was awarded Best Science, Technology and Innovation Communicator by the Rwanda National Council for Science and Technology (NCST), largely for raising awareness of these fields through my journalism. As part of the award, I was required to undertake a project that would further enhance public awareness — so I chose to write a book targeting young people, which led to the creation of Mutoni: The Innovator of Kiruku. Through engaging text and illustrations, the book highlights the relevance of science in everyday life and shows that age, gender or location should never limit the pursuit of knowledge and discovery.
